Pre-Semester Vacay: Lisbon, Portugal

Prior to arriving in Sevilla for the start of the semester, my roommate and I decided to spend the weekend in Lisbon, Portugal. Lisbon was the best choice! Everyone speaks English and everyone is incredibly friendly. Our roommate and I befriended a barista at a local cafe and made that the very first stop of every day we were there. We spent a total of 3 days and 2 nights in Lisbon.

Shopping:

My personal favorite part of Lisbon are the small local vintage and thrift shops. Being from Hawaii, I didn't realize how much colder it would be in Europe so I picked up a leather jacket and coat from a vintage store. The jacket was only $30 and the coat $10. Many people will tell you that Europe is much more expensive than Asia in terms of study abroad but don't let that steer you away from choosing a European city. Shopping is incredibly satisfying! In most typical fast fashion stores you can find clothes for at low as $2 which is unheard of in the US. Everyone in Europe is dressed well, everyone the children. I realized after the first day that I would need to stock up on some statement pieces. I was a little worried that this would mean I'd have to spend more money but stores carry unique pieces that help you elevate simple basics. Most vintage shop owners in Lisbon are deeply involved in the art community and source pieces based on personality rather than brand but keep items priced fairly. My friend Ally was able to buy vintage dresses for $10 a piece and I was able to pick up vintage Longchamp for $10 too!

Food:

Most people will choose Asia over Europe because of the food but I don't think it's that bad... I really wouldn't choose European food over Asian food but sometimes I find myself surprised. Lisbon had really really REALLY good fresh fruit and juices. Kossie's Cafe in City Central had fresh juice for $3. I had 2 every day I was there. I also really loved their breakfast food! Lisbon is such a diverse community that restaurants had a mix of cuisines and almost every breakfast place we visited had amazing food. One brunch spot had coffee, juice, a choice of meal, AND a fruit bowl for only $20.

If you're in Spain or near Portugal, I think Lisbon is a great place to spend a few days in.
